"You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my community."
-- Matthew 16:18, author's translation

Given that Peter fades from view halfway through the book of Acts and that he left no gospel account in his name, it is tempting for many biblical scholars to dismiss him as a vague figure in Christian history and downplay his influence in the early church.

Martin Hengel rejects this underestimation of the apostle and argues that Peter was in fact the Rock, central to the development of both the Jewish and the Gentile Christian communities. Hengel clearly shows how each of the four gospels specifically highlights Peter's foundational role. He considers what Peter's message must have been as an eyewitness of Christ, reflects on Peter's theology, and draws attention to Peter's work as an organizer and mission strategist. Hengel also examines the contributions of married apostles -- like Peter -- and their family communities to the rapid and enduring spread of the Christian message.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Paul J. Achtemeier
— Union Theological Seminary in Virginia
"In this study of Peter's decisive role in shaping the theology of the early Christian traditions, Martin Hengel provides a wealth of material on the historical circumstances and background of both Hellenistic and Jewish/rabbinic thought and history. Revealing Peter as theologian and mission organizer, the book contains a gold mine of information not only about Peter but also about the early church and its development. A highly recommended study."

This book is to be used in a Sunday school series of lessons. I am a teacher. The book is a little hard to read since it is a translation from German but it is still a god book. Books such as this, written by Bible exegesis experts, are deep and difficult. They are of good value to those who wish to delve deep into theology. This book is not a simple biography of Peter but discusses his life in the setting of what he did. There is a good discussion of what happened to the other apostles. The main subject is the interaction, and at times confrontation, between Peter, Paul and James the Just melding Acts, 1st cor., 1 Peter and James. This is the most interesting part of the book to me and the best discussion of this early church conflict that I have read in preparation for this class. For those interested in theology and early church conflict without the Catholic bias toward Peter as the first Pope (& I'm not disparaging that or am I anti-catholic), this is an excellent discussion from a neutral point of view giving all sides of the arguments of the first century Christian church. Great book.

I love St. Peter and was looking forward to a book about his life. This however, was not the book for me. I've got a Master's degree, I can understand technical text and appreciate footnotes but this book is more for a doctoral candidate in theology. It is thick in rhetoric and data.
If you are a college professor studying religion, if you enjoy data analysis and jargon, go for it. If you are looking for a beautiful weaving together of historical fact in a story format, this is not the book for you (or me). Clearly written by a brilliant historian but for other brilliant historians.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book from which I have learned much.

The Gospels of Mark and Matthew provide a good assessment of Peter, but do not inform us about Peter’s part in the expansion of the Christian mission post Pentecost. As the author of the Acts accompanied Paul (and was able to gain from him details of his mission prior to joining him) we learn a good deal about Paul and the mission as if he was THE church builder.
In the Acts Peter is no longer mentioned by Luke after the early verses in chapter 15, thereafter Paul is firmly centre stage. Also Paul has left a body of writings in his epistles giving us a picture of Church expansion, providing a one-sided view.
Discounting the pseudepigraphical 1 Peter and 2 Peter, there is nothing equivalent that Peter has authored, yet information from the Church Fathers plus information from the New Testament provides a picture of the Church’s first leader and his missionary work.
It becomes clear that Peter had to work with both the strict Jewish Christianity of James and the Gentile Christianity of Paul.
The second section in the book covers the issue of married Apostles and the fact that their wives were also part of the mission. Most of the twelve were married.
In the Dominical logion “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands” ESV, Mark 10:29-30 (Matthew 19:29) did not include wives! Divorce was not part of Jesus’ intention - far from it! Paul’s letters reveal the work of Christian couples.
Only Luke 18:29 includes wives but Luke was writing in a later period and no doubt influenced by Paul’s views; “To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.” 1 Corinthians 7:8-9

It is not just Peter we learn more about but also about that nascent period of the Christian mission.
The book is a worthwhile read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein für mich weitgehend neuer Zugang zu Petrus

3.0 out of 5 stars useful but flawed

Hengel is always worth reading but this is disappointing. While lamenting the lack of reliable data on Peter, Hengel, conditioned by Tubigen I expect, discarded his epistles in such a perfunctory way it grieved me. In his desire to give Peter the respect he deserves he speculates much but underestimates the value of those writings - and the integrity of the earliest Christian writers - swallowing the notion that many of the NT's greatest writings were produced by amazing but unknown theologians who pretended to be apostles.
