Saladin is perhaps the one and only Muslim ruler who emerges with any clarity in standard tales and histories of the Crusades; this is a translation of Baha’ al-Din Ibn Shaddad’s account of his life and career. Ibn Shaddad (1144-1234) was clearly a great admirer of Saladin and was a close associate of his, serving as his qadi al-’askar (judge of the army), from 1188 until Saladin’s death in 1193. His position and his access to information make this an authoritative and essential source for Saladin’s career, while his personal relationship with the sultan adds a sympathetic and moving element to the account of his final years. Aside from its inherent value as a source for the history of Egypt and the Middle East, it therefore provides a much-needed complement and corrective to the widely-known Latin accounts of the Crusades and the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 12th century. The present translation is based on a fuller edition of the text than that used in the previous 19th-century translation, and takes into account the translator’s readings of the earliest manuscript of the work, dated July 1228.

After the 14th revision I shall just say I enjoyed reading this book. It is a good read as well as being a must have for anyone with even a remote interest in the crusades, the military orders (mentioned in passing a few times), the history of the area, the history of religion and so on. I must also mention pleasure of seeing the view from the other side which this enabled me to do. It was interesting to see (among others) Richard the Lionheart's name always followed by a phrase similar to 'may God forsake him'.

I love this book because the author did a marvelous job and presented a unique, yet a rational and bright reflexion of the rare and excellent history of Lord Saladin!

The only thing I recommend (not to the book) but to the company I bought the book from is that they should not let handwriting, durty spots and marks on the book because the book was sent in a completely disgusting form!

I expect from amazon to take this small and important remark as a serious issue to make sure of it's customer's satisfaction!

Translator has scripted and organized the anecdotes in clear, easily read narratives, making Salaldin appreciated as the great warrior king many historians, have in the past, recognized. What a superb book. Kept me on the tip of my chair throughout. Sultan Salaah ad-Dunya wad-Deen ibn Ayyoub has some incredibly gangster quotes and stories which will fill you with Izzah. We learn from his bravery and his humility. From his honesty and his forbearance. And moreover, from his sincere acts servitude and obedience to Allah azzawajal. In the words of Ibn Shaddah the author, "O God, You inspired in him generosity, but You are the more generous one. Generously bestow Your mercy and good pleasure upon him, O Most Merciful of the Merciful."

This is a great biography of a Muslim Warrior/Prince. The author was a contemporary adviser to Saladin. He obviously admires him, but even accounting for this the bio is still really good. And it gives a Muslim view of the Crusades.
