While much work has been done on goddesses of the ancient world and the male gods of pre-Christian Scandinavia, the northern goddesses have been largely neglected. Roles of the Northern Goddess presents a highly readable study of the worship of these goddesses by men and women. With its use of evidence from early literature, popular tradition, legend and archaeology, this book investigates the role of the early hunting goddess and the local goddesses who were involved in all aspects of the household and the farm. What emerges is that the goddess was both benevolent and destructive, a powerful figure closely concerned with birth and death and with destiny of individuals.

I'm a typically quite cynical of 'Religion' and 'Women's Studies' books that contain the word 'Goddess' in the title. I have seen far to many horrible goddess orientated books that are simply geared to make money off of a relatively gullible and uneducated few. Hilda Ellis Davidson has constructed a modern masterpiece within the pages of 'Roles of the Northern Goddess.' This work is a rare find for those who are interested in the goddesses and women of ancient Northern Europe. It is extremely well researched and cited. Her bibliography contains approximately three hundred entries. Though I have purchased the paperback, I should have bought the hardcover: it is a valuable edition to my library.

First off the book covers a range of materials on female goddesses but a lot of information is inferred or left to your imagination. For myself some of the references to eastern cultures were a bit of a stretch to see how they would relate to the Anglo Saxons and other northern cultures. I think the real strength of this book is the writings on the "Angel of Death" and the section talking about the observed death ritual and the section on the loom. I could see little glimpses of how life might have been for women and what role they played. I appreciated the inference that women were expected to sing prior to their wedding even though this isn't specifically spelled out. I also appreciated how young married women might lament missing the freedom of not being married and of having heavy responsibilities.

Overall the book is a keeper and worth the price. The author unlike at least one other writer seems to have kept her religious beliefs (whatever they may or may not be) out of the pages. I could infer some of the effects of Romanization and subsequent Christianization in the later period. Still even with these influences the author was able to point out some very lingering influences paganism brought to religious beliefs. Overall I think this book shines in its appreciation of women in the lives of the culture even if it may fall a bit short of living up to the title overall.

I would absolutely buy this book again and anything else written by Hilda...

This book is full of good in formation, but some of her conclussion about Frigg and Freyja in particular are a little strange. The Celtic in formation in the book is solid, as in most of the other information. She did however leave out a chapter on the Goddesses of war, and the women warroirs, but over all it's not a bad place to start, take it witha grain of salt.
