Herod the Great, demonized by Christian writings, is one terrifically interesting historical figure. Unsure of his place in history because of his Idumaean ancestry, he was intent on securing this place in history by building beautiful civic and private edifices. As a man he struggled with the common problems that public figures and leaders always encounter--to be strong, well-loved by his own people, and respected by his adversaries and peers in other positions of strength and leadership, and to matter to history. He was bested by the hubristic Roman leadership and his penchant for killing his family and heirs was not conducive to bringing a strong dynasty to his throne, but then, if truth be honored, there were not many public men who have not resorted to this method of insuring their position of authority over all. This volume offers lovely illustrations of Herod's architectural enterprises and gives history of their longevity and importance. Not a history of Herod, per se, but a good piece on his architectural gifts to us.
